from Carl Rasmussen

Sam was a truly amazing person. He had an incredible social generosity, which meant that everyone around him felt like a member of a big family. He was extremely generous with his ideas, always pointing to the contributions of others. He had an infectious enthusiasm of amazing breadth.

I first met Sam when I was a TA for the neural networks course in Toronto in 93/94, and later we we're both at Gatsby. Memories of him which stand out are "on projector" research sessions in the Gatsby tea room, where the keyboard passed back and forth and people passing through to get coffee offered opinions to the graphs and code flickering past. Somehow, this was so typically Sam.

I wish we could all be a bit more like he was.
