Sam Roweis died unexpectedly on January 12, 2010.

He was a truly wonderful person; a beloved son, husband and father; and a treasured friend and colleague.

This is a place for all of us who were lucky enough to know Sam to share our memories and to help celebrate his life.

from Mike Wehr

My favorite memory of Sam is his entrance to our Halloween party, at our upstairs apartment in LA. Sam wore a long black cloak and walked on stilts he had fashioned out of tall tomato juice cans strapped to his feet. He made it across the parking lot and up the stairs, but as he stepped in the door and onto the thick carpet, he fell headlong into the crowd, sending drinks and grad students flying. It was spectacular.

Sam's vibrance and enthusiasm inspired a passion for science in me when the grad school grind was at its most tedious. His excitement was infectious and I will miss him dearly.
